YOU BETTER YOU BET (AND WE LOST)

Fans come from far and wide
To view the play of a backstop
That goes by the name of Varitek
But answers to the Call to ‘Cowboy Up’

Oh the Boston faithful burst into joy
When their catcher melds a ploy
To skirt the rules and come up aces
Even as he hits them long, and circles the bases

Whether it’s tripping players at the plate
Getting outs called without the ball
Or walking into a batter’s follow through
He somehow always gets the call

Playing in the shadow of the bigger bats
Varitek keeps his head when it goes to the mats
Catching pitchers with pitches so varied
Some balls flutter, some zip, some get buried

His chest as thick as a forest of trees
On his back he wears double threes
And down 2 games - nil, when the A’s came to play
Varitek made sure it was not their day

And so Varitek quietly carries the Sox
Even though Pedro and Manny get the bucks
Boston doesn’t care as the Bambino’s Curse
May have finally taken its turn for the worse

There are no cries of digity‘18, Dent or Buckner
The Bostonites rally ‘round their All Star catcher
It was the mighty Varitek with the silent blows
That sent the Oaklanders their recent woes.
