What does this do for the A's? It assures that they have four DH's. Two of which will play in the field. Daric Barton already has shown his inability with the glove and his ability to be suspected of stealing signs. Bobby Crosby did not deserve a 'Booby Corsby' in the Game Chat last night for his error as Daric Barton had a routine scoop and instead frying panned it.
Jack Cust looks like a contest winner trying to catch a routine flyball out in leftfield.
And Mike Sweeney; you tip your cap to a guy who is trying his best on anm aching knee...but sometimes your best just isn't good enough. Sweeney has been slapping and dumping the ball around and last night he took a fastball deep in the 8th inning. He was able to do so BECAUSE it was the 8th inning of a 2-0 game and the opposing pitcher feed him one he knew Sweeney would swing at. They call it a, "here it is hit it (and get yourself out)" pitch. Sweeney geared up for it, got it, and yanked it all of 338 feet. About 3 rows deep in dead left just to the right of the fair pole. Sweeney's done, folks. It would be nice if the A's could have 28 roster spots, but they don't.
Meanwhile Dan Johnson, the A's every day 1st baseman was DFA's even before he played a game for the Tampa Bay Rays. Johnson is out there, again, but the A's have no room at DH for Barton.
The other part of the Official Press Release is that Travis Buck is headed to the 15 Day DL, Eric Chavez is going to the 60 Day DL and that Mark Ellis will now patrol all of the right side of the infield by himself - playing both 2nd base and 1st base for the A's to allow an extra DH into the batting order.
